Mae Surin Waterfall, Mae Hong Son

Mae Surin Waterfall is a single level waterfall that is high enough to draw a gape and p pain in your neck. It is approximately 300m high and is the highest single-level waterfall of Thailand.

NAMTOK MEE SURIN NATIONAL PARK COVERS AN AREA OF 596SQ.KM. in Khun Yuam district and Mae Hong Son town. The ramges of mountains that lie paralleled with highway 108 are clad with Montane Rain Forest, Montane Oak-pine Forest, Seasonal Rain Forest, Mixed deciduous Forest, and Deciduous dipterocarp forest. The highlight of this national park is the sunflower hill of Doi Mae U-Kho, Mae Surin Waterfall, rafting activity along Pai River, and Huai Fai Kho Wildlife Conservation Project.

Mae Surin Waterfall is a not-to-miss attraction in Namtok Mae Surin National Park. Originated from Huai Mae Surin, the waterfall is set amidst the towering limestone mountains. Being one of the highest waterfalls of Thailand, the water throws itself right from the cliff approximately 220m high down to the green valley below. Visitors could gain impressive view of this waterfall from the beauty spot provided by the national park. If ones want to get closer to the waterfall, however, ones can also trek along the steep path that cuts down the ridge of the hill. The distance is about 3km and journey will take at least 2-3 hours. Actually, this waterfall is suitable for a visit all year, but the fall is most beautiful between November to December. If you come during that period, you can also visit the sunflower hill of Doi Mae U-Kho which will be blooming wonderfully at the same time.

ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA OF NAMTOK MAE SURIN NATIONAL PARK


Rafting down Pai River : Rafting activity along Pai River could be divided into two programs according to the distances. The long course takes around 3-4 hours, while the short around 0.30-1.30 hours.

1. Long Rafting Course : Start from Ban Huai San, enjoy an easy and unhurried sail along the khong River. Visit a small waterfall called Namtok Susa, then have a little bit more exciting moment when the boat enter Pai River. Along the way, you can appreciate the lush forest and natural settings on the riverbank, until the journey terminates at the national park office.

Rafting Fee : 1,000 baht/person ( 6 persons a boat/ if less than 4 persons, you must charter a whole boat for 4,000 baht ). This rate includes lunch, rafting equipment, life jacket, helmet, and boatmen.

2. Short Rafting Course : Start from the national park office and end at Ban Thoong Kong Mu, rafters will have a chance to see wonderful natural scenery of Pai and farmer lives in the agricultural area on both sides of Pai riverbank.

Rafting Fee : 300 baht/person ( 6 persons a boat/ if less than 4 persons, you must charter a whole boat for 1,200 baht )

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN NAMTOK MAE SURIN NATIONAL PARK


Toon Bua Tong at Doi Mae U-Kho : Declared as Thoong Bua Tong Forest Park on July 21, 1999, under the administration of Namtok Mae Surin National Park, Toong Bua Tong is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Mae Hong Son.

Bua-Tong is the Thai name of Mexican Sunflower ( Tithonia diversipblia ). It has yellow petals, comparatively smaller than common sunflowers, and it blooms only once a year in early November and droops in late December. So if you want to visit Doi Mae U-Kho to watch magnificent wild sunflower scenery, it is important to come at the right time. In November and December, all the hills around the area will turn gold with the blooming sunflowers. Ones can see such scenery as far as the eye can see from the beauty spots that the Forset Park has arranged.

Mae Yuam Luang Waterfall : Mae Yuam Luang Waerfall is located around 500m further from the turn to Doi Mae U-Kho. It is a small waterfall originated by a small sream and surrounded by cool and shady bamboo woods.

Mae U-Kho Waterfall : From the beauty spot of Doi Mae U-Kho, turn left for around 3 km to visit Mae U-Kho Waterfall. It is a medium-sized waterfall that flows over a cliff approximately 30m high.

Wild Orchid Conservation Center : From Doi Mae U-Kho, there is a sideroad to Mae Surin Waterfall. Drive further for 1km from Doi Mae U-Kho, there will be a right turn that leads to Wild Orchid Conservation Center. This center is founded since 1994 to respond to Her Majesty's wish. The purpose in establishing this center is to prevent wild orchids from extinction and to distribute orchid shoots as to help local people.

FACILITIES


Lodging houses : There are altogether 12 lodging houses in the area of the national park office. Each house is for 4-15 persons, and the rates vary from 1,200-2,000 baht/night. At the national park ranger unit 1, there are 4 other houses that could accommodate from 5-20 persons. The rates are 1,000-2,000 baht/night

Tents : There is tentground around the national park office that could accept about 100 persons, and another ground for 300 persons at the national park ranger unit. Tent for rent costs 150-300 baht/night, but if you bring your own tent, the fee is 30 baht/night.

TO GET THERE


Namtok Mae Surin National Park Office is located around 37km from Khun Yuam district administrative office. From Khun yuam town, take highway 1263 pass the turn to Mae Yuam Luang Waterfall, Ban Pang Tong, Ban Hmong Mae U-Kho, until you reach Thong Bua Tong at Doi Mae U-Kho. From this spot, there will be a dirt road leading to Mae Surin Waterfall which is only around 15km away.
