Mae Ya Waterfall, Chaing Mai


Location: within Doi Inthanon National Park, Chiang Mai

DOI INTHANON NATIONAL PARK IS THAILAND'S HIGHEST PEAK; IT IS 2.565M ABOVE SEA LEVEL AND COVERS AN AREA OF 1,005 SQ.KM. At this height, the weather on Doi Inthanon is comfortably cold all year round. Ranges of mountains of Doi Inthanon give birth to many tributaries of Ping River and formed many beautiful waterfalls, for instanct Siriphum Waterfall, Wachirathan Waterfall, Mae Pan Waterfalls, Mae Klang Waterfall, and Mae Ya Waterfall. This marvellous mountain is accessible by car and it is suitable for travelling all year round. Up there, you may enjoy driving, trekking, bicycling, bird watching, and waterfalls sightseeing.

Originated from a stream called Huai Mae Ya, Mae Ya Waterfall is one of largest and most beautiful water­falls in Thailand. Actually it is said to be second only to Tee Lor Su Waterfall. Located amidst the shady and cool forest settings, the water flows gracefully over the 280m high cliff down to the Ping River. Today the national park office has organized a beauty spot at the foot of this fall, so that tourists are able to appreciate the beauty of this waterfall easier and better.


ACTIVITIES NEAR MAE YA WATERFALL :


Visitors might enjoy various activities on Doi Inthanon, but if you wish to visit Mae Ya Waterfall in a more enjoyable way, why don't you try bicycling to this fall? Bicycling route: Pha Tang-Mae Ya Waterfall Distance: 29km (3-4 hours)

The start of the journey is at Pha Tang Forest Ranger Unit Doi Pha Tang is a hill upon which Doi Pha Tang Palace and Pha Tang Forest Ranger Unit are located. The first part of the journey is all downhill with Doi Hua Seu on your left. After a while, you will reach Ban Khun Ya Noi, which is an interesting village whose people still lead primitive, agricultural style of life. After pedaling on for around 1 0km, you will find another Karen village called Ban Mai Sawan.

This peaceful community is located in the middle of pure natural setting, with green step farms that will turn golden in the harvest time. From this village,ride on until you find a concrete road, turn left for another 400m, there you are at Mae Ya Waterfall. Most tourists will make an arrangement with car to pick them up around this waterfall, in order to get back to spend the night at the national park office (km marker 31).

Bicycling route: Mae Klang Waterfall-Mae Ya Waterfall Distance: 17km (2-3 hours) From Mae Klang Waterfall Forest Ranger Unit, ride a bicycle along the concrete road to Ban Muang Prang. Apart from the two beautiful waterfalls to visit, along the way ones can also see impressive scenery of Thoong Luang, which are rice paddies that change color every season.

After passing Thoong Luang, enter the road to Mae Ya Waterfall. This fall is said to be the one of most beautiful waterfalls of Inthanon National Park.

You may rest here for a while before pedaling back to the start or riding on minibus as arranged.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS ON DOI INTHANON :


Mae Klang Waterfall: Located at the km marker 8 on highway 1009, Mae Klang Waterfall is approximately 20m high and is second only to Mae Ya Waterfall. It is a charming spot for a picnic, but not very suitable for swimming especially in rainy season. Close to Mae Klang Waterfall is another fall named Wang Kwai Waterfall, which is also originated fromHuai Mae Klang.

Wachiratarn Waterfall: Located at around the km marker 21 along the way to the top of the mountain, Wachiratarn Waterfall, previously called Tad Kong Yong, is a very grand and magnificent waterfall that is accessible by car. Nowadays you can also enjoy Cliff abseiling, which is a new exciting activity at this fall. In rainy season, however, the water will be flooding over the cliff so strongly that it is impossible to get dose to the fall.

Siriphum Waterfall: Previously called Namtok Song PiNong (meaning twin waterfalls), Siriphum Waterfall is actually two strips of very high and attractive waterfalls running down in the middle of the forest near the km marker 30.

Mae Pan Waterfalls: Located at the km marker 37 on doi Inthanon-Mae Chaem Road, Mae Pan Waterfalls comprise many interesting waterfalls, for instance, Mae Pan Waterfall (almost 100m high), Huai Sai Luang Waterfall (3-5m high), Than Thong Waterfall (a fairly large waterfall), Pha Samran Waterfall (80m high), and Ob Noi (a river running through narrow valley). In order to visit these attractions, tourists could very well make an expedition along the nature trail around this group of Mae Pan Waterfalls.

FACILITIES :


Near Doi Inthanon National Park Office at km 31, there are plenty of lodging houses and tent grounds for tourists, as well as shops, reataurants, and restrooms.

TO GET THERE :


From Chiang Mai town, you can use highway 108 to Doi Inthanon National Park Office. At the km marker 57 before reaching Chom Thong district, there is a right turn into highway 1009. Go straight on until you find a junction, turn right and you will find the national park ranger unit 1. Doi Inthanon National Park Office is located at the km marker 31.

In order to get to Mae Ya Waterfall, start with highway 1009 for about 1 km and turn left further for 14km, you will find the waterfall there.
